SHILLINGFORD BARTON LANE, Shillingford Abbot SX 98 NW ST. GEORGE

4/96 Pengelly's Farmhouse -

GV II

Farmhouse in 2 occupations. A thorough C19 remodelling of an earlier, probably C17 house. Whitewashed rendered cob; slate roof, hipped at ends of main range and end of front right wing. 2 rear lateral stacks, right end stack. The C19 remodelling has obscured the early details but it is likely that the main range was originally a 3 room and passage plan, the 2 left hand rooms heated by rear lateral stacks, the right hand room by a projecting right end stack. The position of the putative passage was not established at time of survey (1986). A front right wing at right angles to the main range may originally have been a barn (large timber lintel on rear wall) which has been converted to accommodation. Additions at the rear of the main range include a 2 storey block (rear left) running parallel with the main range, a short 2 storey projection, hipped at the end (rear centre) and a lean- to (rear right). These are probably service additions. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front with a central glazed gabled porch. 3 first floor 3-light casements, 3 panes per light. Ground floor window left is a 2-light circa mid C19 small-pane casement with margin glazing; ground floor window right is a 2-light casement, 3 panes per light. The front right wing has a C20 French window and small-pane casements. Interior: Not throroughly inspected. C19 joinery details but earlier features may survive, an oak screen is said to survive below the wall plaster of the right hand wall of the left hand room. Roof trusses said to have been replaced.
