Details
SX 98 NE WOODBURY EBFORD
1/93 Nos 1 & 2 Ebford Barton - - II
2 dwellings, formerly a single farmhouse. C17, much altered in the C19 and C20. Roughcast cob on stone footings with brick patching; half-hipped and gabled end thatched roof. Originally probably a 3-room, cross-passage plan house, with the higher end to the left of a now dismantled passage; hall heated by a rear external stone lateral stack with off-sets; service end heated by a cob end stack; both stacks with brick shafts. The inner room appears to have been largely rebuilt in the C20 at which time the rear parlour wing was probaly reduced in height to a single storey; it retains some ovolo moulded windows. A barn of late jointed cruck construction (i.e. possibly of C18 or C19 date) was added to the higher end on the same alignment as the main range. A service-end extension, possibly C18, stands forward of the plane of the main front. C20 stair turret to the rear of this latter feature. 2 storeys. Front: 3 window range; with three 2-light casement windows to both floors. Recessed bay to the left of this with a 2-light casement window to each floor represents part of the C20 reworking of the inner room; front wing to the left with late C20 2- and 4-light casement window. Service room extension with a shallow bay window, all windows C20. Similar C20 fenestration to right-hand end elevation and rear, except for one C17 2-light casement window, with chamfered mullion and surround. Parlour wing with two 3-light C17 windows, with ovolo moulded mullions and jambs, and a double cyma-recta surround; all timber. The barn is partly of cob, but the front has been largely rebuilt in brick; however the front blades of 6 jointed crucks have been re-used here; the rear principals rest on the wall plate; the whole is nailed rather than pegged, and looks very late. Interior of house; service room (Lower Ebford Barton) with Heavitree stone fireplace with chamfered cranked wooden lintel with scroll stops; ceiling beams to this room and hall (Ebford Court), with scroll and step stops. An early C18 fielded panel door to Lower Ebford Barton.
