Details
ALPHAMSTONE HENNY BACK LANE TL 83 NE (west side) 2/14 Ansell's Farmhouse II House. Early C16, extended in C19 and C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 2-bay hall aligned NW-SE with late C16 axial chimney stack in SE bay, storeyed parlour/solar bay to NW. Service bay to SE demolished and replaced by large early C19 block, extended to SW in 1979. Other extensions to NW, 1979. Original house of one storey with attics, remainder of 2 storeys. SE elevation has a dado of red brick, 1979, with plaster above. 2-window range of early C19 sashes of 16 lights with some crown glass. Central C20 glazed door with early C19 pediment on scrolled brackets, and C20 repro- duction sash of 12 lights above. Roof hipped. The interior of the original building has jowled posts, heavy studding, original floor of lodged plain joists in NW bay, inserted floor in hall consisting of transverse and axial beams and joists of horizontal section, all chamfered with stops of an unusual design. There is evidence of an unglazed window below the half-hip at the NW end. Crownpost roof with thin axial braces, not smoke-blackened, indicating that a timber-framed chimney was present from the outset, before the present brick stack. The early C19 SW block has original folding shutters of pine on the ground floor. The house was near-derelict before restoration in 1979.
