Details

BURES HAMLET STATION HILL TL 9034 and TL 9033 (north side) 5/45 and 6/45 (36/168) Nos. 20 and 22 19.7.82 GV II Wrongly shown on O.S. map as Cansdale Cottage, Station Road. House. Late medieval, altered in C18 and C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 4 bays facing SW, with C18 chimney stack at left end and early C17 axial stack near right end, forming a lobby-entrance. Short C18 extension at right. Wing to front of left end, 1982. Lean-to extension at rear. 2 storeys. 4-window range of C20 sashes, and one more on first floor of front wing. Door at front of C20 gabled porch. The interior has jowled posts, exposed heavy studding; cranked braces to 2 tiebeams at left. The joists in front of the main stack are of horizontal section, chamfered with step stops, arranged longitudinally; other joists much repaired and renewed. Unglazed window in upper rear wall, with 3 diamond mullions. Main hearth has original 0.33 metre brickwork at sides, renewed at back, mantel renewed. Crownpost roof, incomplete.
