Details
SU 61 SW HAMBLEDON CAMS HILL 10/11 Cams II* House. Mid C16 timber frame, raised and re-roofed early C17, late C17 east wing and staircase, C18 service extension, and extension of c.1820. Lower walls of painted brickwork in Flemish Garden Wall bond, upper tile-hung: exposed frame at the south end of the old block, some exposed framing to the east wing which is mostly tile-hung, painted brickwork to the early C19 part. Hipped tile roof, with plaster coved eaves and wrought-iron gutter-brackets, brick dentil eaves to the C19 part, hipped dormers. Four bay timber frame with central smoke bay, later filled with a massive chimney, and a chimney attached to the outside of the frame at the south end; west front elevation of two storeys 2 above 3 windows. Casements, C18 upper leaded lights. 6-panelled (2 top glazed) door beneath a C20 canopy on brackets. The east wing is two storeys and attic, 1 above 2 above 1 windows. 1st floor old mullion and transom casements. The (south-east) angle is filled by a brick block of one storey and (later) attic, with a half-octagonal south end, of three tall casements, with a hipped roof and dormer. At the north end a single-storeyed service wing has brick walls and tiled roof. Inside, there is a fine dog-leg staircase, and the rooms of the east wing have pinewood panelling: the service wing has a brick sink, an aged pump, and a large fireplace. East of the C19 block is a glazed conservatory, of the early or mid C19.
