II*
Arched gateway flanked by single-storey lodges. 1793 with lodges added c1840. Brick and rendered archway with Coade stone dressings and iron gates, ashlar lodges with hidden slate roofs.
Roman-style archway has an architrave moulding with a sculptured head keystone, the impost moulding passing along the inner face. On each side are coupled pilasters on a pedestal, of Ionic Order (of low relief Adam style), with a modillion entablature. The bases of these pilasters are inscribed COADE, LONDON, 1793. The blocking course at the top has a raised central section, surmounted by an ornate vase. The simple lodges are linked to the gateway by plain curved walling, the whole having a plain blocking course, a cornice, rusticated quoins, and a plinth. On the north there is a sash in reveals, on the south a half-glazed door beneath a panel.
There is a pair of heavy cast iron gates.
This gate was built for the Herbert family as an entrance to the Highclere estate.
