SU 6652 OLD BASING THE STREET 6653 22/41 26.4.57 Tithe Barn
I C16, C17. A large rectangular brick structure, divided externally into 6 bays by buttresses, with 2 tall (4-centred) arched entrances at the second and five bay, each bay with 3 ventilating slots at 2 levels. The steep gabled tile roof is carried on arch-braced purlins supported on timber trusses (11 within a 10-bay interior sub-division) comprising a high cambered tie-beam above arch braces, with 4 verticals, the 2 centre uprights meeting a secondary tie. There are vertical studs above the massive wallplates. The red brick walling is in English bond, the buttresses are weathered at the top and midway, with a high plinth round the whole building. The entrances have inner stone arches; on the north side are smaller plain brick arches. Attached to the west end is a smaller unit of the later period but in a similar style, having 4 bays and a north aisle (still of lesser total width than the main block). The walling is again in red brickwork, with 2 ventilators at 2 levels to each bay, a high plinth, and a cambered arch to the entrance. The Queen Post truss rests on the brick wall on the south side but has posts and lower ties (with struts) on a low wall linked to the outer aisle walling. Roofing is of corrugated iron, which extends across an outshot on the south side of 2 eastern bays, the form of this lower roof continuing as a tile roof for one bay in front of the main block. This outshot has weather-boarded walling within brick pillars, on a low brick wall. Ancient Monument.
