Details
SU 51 SE SOBERTON 9/4 Rookesbury Lodges (Nos. 1 & 2) II Two identical lodges, linked by a rail and gate-posts, being the former entrance to Rookesbury (House), in Wickham parish. Early and mid C19. Stucco. Single- storeyed buildings of classical form, extended at the rear. The main facades face each other and are symmetrical, of three units framed by four pilasters, containing a doorway in each outer unit. A simple Order with Greek mouldings has an entablature across the facade, plain pilasters with cap and base, and a plinth: the doorways have a cornice, friezes with three roundels, an architrave, and half-glazed doors. Each end has a window within corner pilasters, but the lower extensions are of brickwork on the roadside elevation and stucco towards the park: one outside and two inside sash windows. The extensions continue along the roadside as high brick boundary walls. From mid-points in each main facade there extends a low wall with a stone capping, surmounted by cast-iron rails, and ending on gate piers of simple form in stucco (the original gates now gone).
