SD 96 SE BORDLEY BORDLEY ROAD
(east side) 19/28 Lainger House - II
House. Dated 1673, altered mid-late C19. Rubble, graduated stone slate
roof. 2 storeys, 3 bays; bay 1 projecting as a 2-storey porch; 2-bay farm
building to right. The projecting bay has C17 remains and quoins; the
doorway is in the right return and has a very elaborate moulded surround;
the quoined jambs have 2 quarter-round mouldings divided by a fillet on the
chamfer, which is carried across the lintel as an irregular wavy line, the
central wave lower and the lintel having 3 recessed panels: to left the
letter "I", to right "G" and in the centre the date "1673" above a running
animal (a goat?) and a clover leaf, all in relief. A continuous dripmould,
which has returned from the front of the bay, steps up as a small
shouldered arch over the centre of the lintel. The front of bay 1 has
further eccentric details: a 3-light recessed chamfered window to
ground floor is below the dripmould which steps down and has a stepped stop
to left. The first-floor window is of 3 round-headed lights with cavetto
moulding; the hoodmould has spiral stops and the central part is raised to
form the arms and shoulders of a figure whose carefully carved head, full-
face, appears above. The head is surmounted by a series of 5 perching
ledges, those to each side of the head suggesting a wide-brimmed hat, a
blocked opening directly above the head and a hoodmould over this. Bay 2:
the half-glazed 4-panel door, right, is in a plain stone surround with 3-
stone jambs and large lintel. To left, and bay 3, ground and first floor,
there are 4-pane sashes in plain surrounds. The bay 3 wall-line breaks
forward slightly. The porch. has a lower roof than the main body of the
house; both have bulbous kneelers and gable copings, a large corniced stack
to left gable and to right of bay 2. Interior: the original doorway opened
onto the side of a large stack, the fireplace and flanking doorways facing
into the main room lit by the bay-2 window. The wide arched fireplace has
a moulded chamfer and finely cut voussoirs, the segmental-arched doorways
are also of finely cut blocks, that to right is obscured by a staircase and
partition. 2 spine beams on corbels are boxed in; an inserted partition
screens this room from the later entrance. The bay-3 room is floored at a
higher level and the dividing wall has 2 wooden grilles. The style of the
carving on the house and the fireplace are similar to The Folly, Settle
(1675, q.v.)
