Large country house, now flats. Circa 1780 possibly by J Nash, enlarged and stuccoed early C19, converted and restored 1973, with attic added. Brick, later stuccoed, slate roof. Basically 2 storey raised on basement and attic, 2 rooms deep, 5 bay with added bay projecting on entrance front. Front has added part to LH. To LH bay of original part enclosed Doric porch, pilasters and entablature. Double doors and rectangular fanlight with linked vertical oval glazing pattern. To LH 12-pane sash on both floors. Other bays have tripartite sashes, those on ground floor have cornices on guilloche patterned console brackets. 1st floor raised band. Moulded cornice and blocking course. To main part C20 mansard roof with window in each bay. Garden front has basement; main block of 7 bays, with slightly projecting wings, each end. Basement has broad Doric pilasters. On these is loggia to ground floor of plain columns encased in trellis work rising to bulbous cap. End bays of loggia are enclosed and have casement. Over is balcony to 1st floor with anthemion pattern railing. 12-pane sashes, with louvred shutters and blind boxes to 1st floor. Wings have tripartite sashes, and pediments. Interior remodelled early C20. Late C18 rooms on ground floor facing garden. On other side entrance hall has C20 staircase but room off it has Elizabethan style ceiling. Attribution to Nash comes from G S Repton whose sketch book of a visit to the New Forest illustrates 'Elevation of a house with trellis verandah at 1st floor level by Mr Nash for Mr Mitchell in the New Forest at Lyndhurst', in RIBA Drawings Collection.
