ASHTON UNDER HILL CP ELMLEY ROAD (east side) SO 9837 - 9937 11/32 22/7 The Old Farmhouse and adjoining stable (formerly 30-7-59 listed as Stanley's Farmhouse) GV II
Farmhouse and adjoining stable, now house and garage. Circa cl400, extended Cl6 and C17 with further mid-C19 and mid-C20 alterations. Timber-framed with rendered infill on limestone rubble base, partly painted brick refacing and replacement walling with plain tiled and corrugated iron roofs. Originally a cruck hall house of probably two framed bays aligned north/south and extended by one framed bay to the south end and by the addition of a cross- wing of four framed bays at the north gable end. The north bay of the original part has a large inserted chimney with a brick ridge stack and the cross-wing has an additional single-bay north wing and external ashlar chimney with offsets, two square stacks with moulded capping which adjoins the west bay (in the angle with the main range) and a large east end chimney. Part two storeys, part single storey and attic with dormers; dentilled eaves cornice at rear. Framing: cruck-framed original part with two panels from sill to wall- plate and some close-set studding on west side. Cross-wing has close-set studding to west end and north side and the collar and tie-beam truss at the west end has close-set struts. The north wing has three panels from sill to wall-plate, short straight upper corner braces and a collar and tie-beam truss with two struts to collar and V-strut in apex. West front elevation: main part has a C19 and a C20 canted bay window, two gabled dormers with 2-light casements and the main entrance has a ledged and battened door. The cross-wing gable end has two ground floor C20 cross-casements and a 3-light first floor casement. There is a single-light casement on the south side of the north wing. Former stable adjoins south end of main part. Two framed bays and two levels; two panels from sill to wall-plate and truncated collar and tie-beam truss with four struts at south end. There is a large C20 garage door in the south elevation. Interior: three pairs of full cruck trusses survive. Inserted C17 chamfered cross-beamed ceiling in original north bay and also large fireplace. Moulded stone fireplaces on both floors of west bay of cross-wing; ground floor one has 4-centred head. The rear two bays of the cross-wing have substantial lateral main ceiling beams and a very large fireplace about 12 feet wide.
