EATON BISHOP CP - SO 43 NW Martin's Croft 2/61 GV II

House. Early C18 with earlier origins. Brick with Welsh slate roof and brick stacks. Rectangular plan aligned east/west. Cellar and three storeys. North elevation has five windows, glazing bar sashes with cambered heads, except for late C19 central porch with six-panelled pine front door. Plat band between storeys. Dentilled brick eaves cornice. Two late C20 roof lights. One storey extension to right. Interior has three-flight late C19 pine newel staircase with turned balusters and carved newels. Three marble fireplaces, all mid-C19 and one c1900 fireplace with foliated designs on tiles in Art Nouveau style. Bathroom has late C19 Unitas water-closet with enriched bowl. Rear projecting first floor room has moulded C18 plaster ceiling consisting of an oval panel surrounded by four bird motifs. Hall has six-panelled C18 doors to rooms adjoining. Kitchen has elaborate late C19 cast iron range. Its roof has a pegged king-post truss. Main roof has close- studded partition within and above main ties for former servants' quarters. In this roof space the trusses have interrupted collars supported by angle struts. Martin's Croft was formerly the Rectory. (BoE, p 175/6).
