KINGS SOMBORNE UP SOMBORNE SU 33 SE

5/23 The Thatched Cottage (formerly Lovells Farm 20/6/85 Cottage) II Cottage. Late C15, encased C18, altered C19 & C20. Cruck timber-frame, painted brick and rendered cob encasing, rendered addition, thatch roof. 1 1/2 storey, 3 bay with C20 wing to rear in centre. On road front, in each bay irregular C18 & C19 2-light case- ment, 2 in centre bay, over 2-light casement in eyebrow dormer centre one C18, rest C20. Roof half-hipped. Surviving upper part of cruck exposed at right end. Inside 2 cruck trusses, almost complete, exposed. Full crucks with diagonally set ridge piece, collar and tie-beam that extends to carry wall plate. Diagonally set purlin, scarf jointed at trusses and cut into blade. Top surface of most blades replaced, curved braces run from this part of blade to purlin. During C20 restoration remains of smoke hood found against right of centre truss when C18 stack take down. Flooring over C17 with chamfered beams and joists.
