BANK NEWTON SD 95 SW

5/17 Barn to NW of Newton Hall (formerly listed as Barn 10.9.54 to Newton Hall NW of Newton Hall)

GV II*

Aisled barn, mid C17. Squared rubble with stone slate roof. 6 bays, that at the southern end separated by a stone wall to form the stable. The walls are largely featureless except the south gable end which has to ground floor, one chamfered doorway, a 3-light double chamfered window and a round-headed C18 doorway. To the upper level are two more chamfered doorways and a 3-light and 2-light double chamfered window. In the cheeks of the cart entries are chamfered doorways to the shippens, with elliptical heads. The cheeks carry two of the king-post and angle stout trusses, so there are only two full cross frames, with jowled posts , arched braces, and aisle ties crossed by passing braces from post to aisle rafter. Stop chamfered beams in the stable. The best barn in the area and contemporary with Bank Newton Hall which it faces (q.v.).
