St Helen's Well
II
Well. Probably C18 or C19 on an old site. Stone. The spring forms a pool in a
hollow of ground with a low stone kerb on the side of the outflow. The detail
of this kerb is now indistinguishable except at one end which is formed by a
block with four gables and a carved boss, perhaps figured at each corner. The
block is probably ex situ. The well, however, is said to be Medieval, there was
a Chapel here in 1429 (J N Dinsdale, History of the Church and Parish of St
Andrew, Gargrave, 1966).
