6/46 Cornmill approximately 30 metres north of Mill Farmhouse

GV II

Cornmill and attached outbuildings. Mid C18 raised and altered in C19. Squared sandstone on rubble plinth, with pantile roof. 2-storey, 3-bay Mill; attached 1½-storey, 2-bay cartshed to left and other single-storey outbuildings further to left. Plank door to centre of mill flanked by partly blocked fixed light windows, with tripartite herringbone-tooled lintels. Board lifting door to centre of first floor flanked by similar windows to ground floor, with timber lintels. Tooled stone sills to all windows. Coped gables and shaped kneelers. Cart-shed has double slatted doors beneath heavy timber lintels to both openings. Fixed light with timber lintel to granary above, and coped gable to left. Mill tailrace is carried away through a vaulted stone culvert passing under the mill buildings. Interior: the mill machinery survives intact. Wheel chamber at rear contains overshot iron wheel, c1890, made by J and L Horsfield of Leeds. On the first floor the main shaft is chamfered with stops. 3 sets of stones survive, one set French burr stones, 2 with their furniture. Gearing for subsidiary machinery survives including a well-worn tree trunk in the attic, which formed the spindle for the sack hoist. The mill was in operation until 1975.
