Details
ST GILES STEVENSTONE PARK SS 53 19 IN THE WOOD 23/224 Gate piers approximately 3 metres - east of the East Lodge
GV II
Gateway to Stevenstone Park. Circa 1872-3, contemporary with the rebuilding of Stevenstone House (q.v.) by the Honourable Mark George Kerr Rolle. Sandstone ashlar. Tall gate piers flank the carriageway. They are square in section on chamfered plinths and have moulded cornices surmounted by large limestone carvings of sitting lions holding with one paw a shield carved with the Rolle arms. To left (south) is a pedestrian walkway with a lower square-section pier with low pyramid cap. This still contains the original wooden gate with decorative cross braces. The carriageway gate is a C20 replacement.
