THROWLEIGH MURCHINGTON SX 68 NE 3/231 St. Olaves Cottage
GV II
House, former gamekeeper's cottage. C17, much rebuilt in late C19 - early C20. Granite stone rubble, top section is plastered and is probably cob; granite stack with plastered brick chimney shaft; thatch roof, tile to outshot. Plan: 3-room plan cottage facing south. According to the owner the left end was the game store and gun room. The central room has an axial stack backing onto the gun room and this provides the only evidence of the house's C17 origins. 2 storeys withsecondary outshot to rear of right end room. Exterior: Irregular 4-window front of C20 casements without glazing bars. Left end ground floor window contains small diamond panes of leaded glass. Both the main door which is right of centre and the door at the left end to the game store/gun room are C20. Roof is half-hipped each end. The left end wall contains a late C19- early C20 granite ashlar twin lancet window with sunken spandrels, flanking panelled pilasters and a moulded entablature. It and the plain granite-mullioned window above contain tiny diamond panes of leaded glass. Interior: In the central room the axial beam is soffit-chamfered with straight cut stops and there is a granite ashlar fireplace with replacement oak lintel. These are probably C17. All the rest of the detail is C19 and C20. Roof not inspected. St. Olaves Cottage is one of a group of attractive listed buildings in the hamlet.
