HIGHER TOWN (east side) 8/146 Sampford Peverell Nos. 3 & 5 Higher Town including 17/3/'88 courtyard walls and outbuildings to south and front railings GV II Two adjoining houses. c1850-60 remodelling of earlier building. Plastered stone rubble; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; slate-roof. Plan: The main building has an L-shaped plan. The main block faces onto the street to the west. Two 2-room plan houses each containing one heated and one unheated room with entrance hall and staircase between. No 3 at the left (north) has a projecting gable-end stack, and No 5 at the right end has a rear lateral stack. A 2-room plan rear block projects at right angles behind No 5 and sharing the rear lateral stack. The rear courtyard in the angle of the wings is enclosed by low outbuildings, and at the right (south) end of the main block a walled courtyard including an outbuilding on the south side intrudes into the churchyard. The main building is 2 storeys. Exterior: the main block has deliberately asymmetrical 4-window front of C19 timber mullion-and-transom windows with glazing bars, and all the windows have stucco voussoirs over. Both doorways contain C19 6-panel doors, overlights and panelled reveals but have different doorcases. Each end comer of the main front has quoin strips. The roof is gable-ended. The outer (south) side of the rear block (No 5) has an irregular 4-window front of painted stone-mullioned windows.

Two adjoining houses. Probably C17 or earlier, the front range rebuilt and much of the remainder of the property remodelled after fire damage in 1860s. Plastered stone rubble and cob; slate roof stone rubble stacks finished in C19 and C20 brick. PLAN: L-shaped plan to main block, with the principal front range containing maintentances to Nos 3 and 5 facing the street; large stack at junction with rear wing (part of No 3). Rear courtyard in angle of the wings is enclosed by a former brewhouse and outbuildings of early C19 date, and to the right (south) of front block is a walled rectangular yard with an outbuilding on the south-west side which intrudes into the churchyard. Interior of No 5: C18 and C19 panelled doors and dog-leg stair with chinoiserie balustrade. No 3 not inspected. Subsidiary Features: wall to right of No 3, with keyed false stone arch over central doorway Interior of brewhouse has large segmental-arched fireplace, with iron door to bread oven and boiler on left with copper; stone flag floor; boxed beam and early/mid C19 3-bay roof.

A narrow strip of ground along the front of the main block is enclosed by C19 cast iron spear-headed railings with vase-headed standards.
