NORTH BOVEY SX 78 SW 4/191 Bowden Mill and adjoining cottages - II
Mill with attached 2 (formerly 3) millworkers' cottages. Circa early C19. Granite rubble walls, rendered to mill and left-hand cottage. Slate roof with gable ends. 4 rendered brick stacks, axial and gable. Large mill building to one end with water wheel attached at its gable end. To the opposite side the cottages adjoin, 2 are double fronted and the end one is single fronted but this has now been incorporated into the adjoining cottage. All are single depth. Lean-to outbuilding attached to end of single-fronted cottage approached on first floor by external stone steps possibly granary. The mill is 2 1/2 storeys, the houses are 2 storeys. Mill has large wooden overshot water wheel attached at left gable end, slightly dilapidated. 2-window front to the left with recessed bay to the right under overhanging top storey. Windows are single fixed lights of 16 panes. Door to ground and first floor of right-hand gable end of this section. The recessed section to the right is weatherboarded with a loading door to the right on the first floor. Over-hanging top storey is also weatherboarded. Cottage attached to right of mill building has asymmetrical 2- window front with sash windows all of 12 panes except for ground floor left which has 4. C20 flat roofed porch part glazed with glazed front door. The central cottage has symmetrical 3-window front of 16 pane early C19 sash windows without horns. Ground floor windows have timber lintels. Central door of 6 moulded panels probably contemporary. Right-hand cottage has 1 window front with a window and door to the left on the ground floor. First floor window identical to those of adjoining cottage, ground floor one is 12 pane replacement with horns C20 part glazed door. Timber lintels to ground floor openings. Lean-to outbuilding attached to right gable end recessed from front of house with stone steps leading up at front to first floor door. Interior of mill contains much original machinery and granite mill stones with mechanics for diverting water above the wheel. Approximately 4 metres to north of cottages the mill stream is crossed by a C19 granite rubble bridge with segmental stone voussoir arch of roughly dressed stones and roughly squared coping stones with swept-out abutments.
