Details
LATCHINGDON LATCHINGDON ROAD TQ 89 NE (south side) 5/33 London Hayes, (formerly 10/1/53 listed as Londonhayes) II
House. Late C16, extended in C18. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 4 bays facing W, with C19/C20 axial stack one bay from left end. C18 extension to rear of left end, and C20 conservatory to left of it. Main range of 2 storeys, extension of one storey with attics. W elevation, 2 C20 casements on ground floor, one on first floor. C20 door in original doorway, with moulded jambs and hollow-chamfered 4-centred arched head with floriate carving in the spandrels. Jettied at left end, plastered over. The roof has a gablet hip at the N end. Shaped sprockets on 3 sides of main roof. Some close studding visible internally. Chamfered transverse beam with step stops, supported on half-height jowls, one bay from right end, with plain joists of vertical section. In right end, blocked doorway with mutilated moulded jambs and 4-centred arched head with recessed spandrels, and part of an original window with 2 moulded mullions, rebated for early glazing. In rear elevation, on ground floor, one doorway with moulded jambs and moulded straight head, and one blocked original doorway with plain head. Another blocked original doorway reported to be present on first floor, at left end of rear elevation, now plastered over. First floor and roof not inspected, reported to be much altered. This is part of a larger house of high status which formerly extended to the rear. RCHM 7.
