Details

UPOTTERY ST 20 NW 7/96 Corrymoor Cottage - - II Cottage. Late C17 or C18, some late C19-early C20 modernisation. Plastered local stone rubble, maybe with some cob; stone rubble and brick stacks topped with plastered C20 brick; thatch roof to cottage, tile roof to outshout. Plan: small 3-room plan cottage facing south-south-west, say south and built down the hillslope. Uphill at the left (west) end is the main living room with a gable- end stack. The front doorway is into this room. Small unheated central room. The right (east) end room has a rear lateral stack and is now used as a kitchen. However this stack was inserted in the late C19-early C20 and the owner reports that the room was an animal byre before it was brought into domestic use. Cottage is 2 storeys with a secondary wash house outshot on the left end. Exterior: low building with an irregular 2-window front of late C19-early C20 casements with glazing bars. The main front doorway is left of centre and it contains a late C19-early C20 plank door behind a gabled porch. There is a similar secondary doorway at the right end. The roof is gable-ended. Interior has plain carpentry detail where exposed. Corrymoor Cottage is a rare survival of a small isolated cottage. C19 maps show many similar small cottages in the area but most of the others which stood on their own and well off the roads have since fallen into dereliction and vanished. Also this one has had little modernisation since the early C20.
