Details
CULLOMPTON ST 00 NW 5/59 Growen Farmhouse and adjacent - range of farmbuildings to south - II Farmhouse with range of farmbuildings comprising former cider house, hayloft and stables. Probably a late-C16 or C17 core, completely remodelled in the C19. Cob, stone plinth, roughcast, under mottled-grey slate hipped and gabled end roof. Probably a former 3-room, through-passage plan, the lower-end to the right of the passage, with a rear parlour wing forming an L-shaped plan overall. Axial stack marks hall fireplace backing on to the through-passage; 2 axial stacks to the rear wing, one probably a former end stack. Brick shafts. 2 storeys. Front: 3-window range; 1st floor windows with 12-pane hornless sashes, the sills on brackets, the architraves moulded; 2 tripartite hornless sashes, 4;12;4, under heavy lintels, and with moulded architraves, to the left of the timber, glazed, slate- roofed porch; to the right of this a 2-light window with a 12-pane hornless sash per light. Left-hand elevation: three 3-light unbarred casement windows to 1st floor, two 2- light, and one 4-light casement windows to ground floor. Wide panelled door at junction of wing and main range, under simple canopy on shaped brackets. Interior: large end fireplace to parlour wing, now with C19 detailing; flooring to this room (now the kitchen) made up of C19 red tiles apparently made on the farmstead. Internal panelled shutters. An alcove outside the kitchen wing contains a C19 fitted blue and white porcelain bowl for washing before entering house. Some ancient features may survive concealed beneath C19 work; no roof trusses visible in upper rooms. The range of farm buildings is of two builds, the earliest (early C19) of two storeys with 2 pointed windows to each storey, and Y-tracey in each; an upper door (studded, pointed) is approached by an external flight of stone stairs; another entrance below; the (former) end wall is a timber frame construction with brick nogging below, and weatherboarded above, but this became an internal partition when the range was extended in the late C19; this is of random rubble with brick trim, weatherboarded above.
