Details

CHARLETON CHARLETON (WEST) SX 74 SE 6/4 Charleton Court II

House. Circa early - mid C17 considerably remodelled in mid C19. Stone rubble walls roughly coursed to front block. Gable ended slate roof with Victorian crested ridge tiles. 2 brick axial stacks. Plan: complex plan which could not be easily interpreted without internal access. The front block is a T-shaped range with a long wing behind its left-hand end. The original extent of the house is uncertain but the front range at least is probably original, although raised in height, and of 3-room plan with a short wing at the centre. The rear wing was probably used for service purposes in the C19 and included a kitchen. It has now been divided off from the rest of the house. Exterior: 3 storeys with basement, 2 storeys to rear wing. Regular 3-window front with short projecting central wing. C19 wooden mullions, some ovolo-moulded and casements of 2 and 3-lights. C20 glazed double doors inserted to right on ground floor and circa early C20 leanto timber porch to their left in angle with wing. Windows on this front wall have stone hoodmoulds over them. Interior: inaccessible at time of survey but may contain more C19 features than C17 ones: these may also be good quality and of some interest.
