MALBOROUGH SX 74 SW 5/30 Higher Collaton Cottage

II

House, probably originated as farmhouse. C17 considerably altered in C20. Rendered rubble walls, probably incorporating some cob. Gable ended thatch roof. Brick stack at left gable end, axial rubble stack with brick shaft. Plan: originated with 3-room and probably a through-passage plan, lower end to the left. Hall heated by stack at its higher end. Plan probably altered in C20 when a leanto behind the left-hand end was also built. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5 window front with 3 circa early C20 2-light casements at the centre on first floor, otherwise mid C20 windows. C18 or earlier open-fronted leanto stone porch to left of centre with stone seats in either side and wide C20 plank door behind. Interior: inaccessible at time of survey but may contain features such as ceiling beams, open fireplaces and early roof timbers.
