3/199 Fisher's Farmhouse
GV II
House. C16 and C17, altered in early C19. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 3-bay main range facing E with C19 axial stack in right bay. Early C17 2-bay crosswing to left extending to rear, with C19 central stack. C20 flat-roofed 2-storey extension in rear angle. C18/C19 single-storey extension with central stack behind right end of main range. 2 storeys. Ground floor, 2 early C19 sashes of 20 lights and one slatted larder window. First floor, early C19 sashes of 20, 20, 12 and 16 lights respectively. The larder at the right end of the main range has an early brick floor. The main range, originally of one storey, was raised approx. 1.50 metres in the C18 or C19. The early C17 inserted floor has chamfered axial and transverse beams with lamb's tongue stops, and joists (plastered to the soffits) supported on pegged clamps. A pair of curved braces rise at a shallow angle to support the middle of the floor, with Jacobean fretted ornament and a moulded square boss at the apex, where they meet the axial beam. Jowled posts, close studding with arched braces trenched to the inside. The crosswing has posts with jowls at both storeys, the lower jowls ornamented with elaborate mouldings, and in one case with a carved design of a diamond within a diamond, defaced. The right girt has dentils carved in the solid, a rare feature in a timber framed house. Close studding partly exposed. At the front there are remains of frieze windows at both levels, the small side windows blocked but probably intact, the central windows replaced by early C19 sashes. Original rebated floorboards. Both roofs rebuilt in softwood. On the Chapman and Andr'e map of 1777 this farm is shown as New House. This house has unusual Jacobean ornament.
