UPOTTERY UPOTTERY ST 20 NW 7/145 Nos 1 - 4 Addington Cottages - GV II Row of 4 cottages. Dated 1869, built by Lord Sidmouth as estate workers cottages. Local stone and flint rubble with grey-coloured limestone ashlar and cream-coloured Membury stone ashlar dressings; stone rubble stacks, 1 chimneyshaft is still stone rubble with ashlar quoins but the others are now plastered; slate roof with crested ridge tiles. Plan: row of 4 contemporary 2-room plan cottages facing west and numbered 1 - 4 from right to left (south to north). The plan is mirrored either side of the centre party wall, that is to say Nos 1 and 2 mirror Nos 3 and 4. The centre pair (nos 2 and 3) share the central front porch and are 2 rooms deep with outer axial stacks shared with the other cottages. The outer cottages Nos 1 and 4 are in crosswings wnich project forward and have their entrances in 2-storey porches set back each end. 2 storeys. Exterior: symmetrical 2:4:2-window front of mostly original timber mullion-and- transom windows with glazing bars. All the ground floor windows and the central 4 first floor windows have pointed segmental arches with voussoirs and quoins of alternate grey and cream blocks and have chamfered reveals. The central porch is gabled and contains 2 doorways, both with segmental pointed arches. The end cottage porch doorways are flat-headed. The cottage doorways contain original plank doors although some now have windows. All the corners have lightly rusticated ashlar quoins and there is a band around the building which meets the windows where the arches spring. The gable of the central porch contains the datestone of 1869 and both crosswing gables contain a plaque carved with the Sidmouth arms. Tnere are 4 small gables between the crosswings, one over each first floor window. All these and the left crosswing gable have original shaped open bargeboards. Interiors: not inspected. These former estate workers' cottages form part of an attractive group of listed buildings in the centre of the village, most of which were built in the C19 by Lord Sidmouth.
