6/199 Southbrook Cottage

GV II

Cottage. Late C17 with C19 alterations. Colourwashed rendered cob and stone ; thatched roof, half-hipped at left end, gabled at right end ; right end stack, back to back axial stacks. Plan: single depth range, 3 rooms wide with a direct entry into the centre room. The left end room may be a later addition and was formerly a separate cottage ; it has a left end entrance. The centre room has a stair in the corner adjacent to the stack with a straight flight with a winder. Single-storey C20 rear lean-to with a corrugated asbestos roof. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front, the eaves thatch eyebrowed over the 3 first floor windows. C19 gabled lattice porch to plank front door to right of centre, 1- and 2-light C19 timber casement windows with glazing bars. The rear elevation has one 1-light window. A second porch and front door on the left gable end gives access to the left end room. Interior: Chamfered cross beam to centre room with straight cut stops, fireplace partly blocked but retaining a chamfered lintel. A recess with a timber sill to the left of the stack was probably a window before the left end room was added, original stair to right of the stack. The right hand room has a C19 grate and C19 chimneypiece introduced from elsewhere. The first floor is very unaltered, the rooms opening into one another and the plaster taken up to the collar of the trusses. Remarkably well-preserved, both internally and externally.
