13/100 Leigh Barton - II
House. Circa mid C17 with thorough C20 renovations. Colourwashed rendered cob and stone rubble; slate roof (formerly thatched), gabled at ends; axial stack and rear lateral stack. Plan: The main range is 3 rooms wide, originally single depth with an entrance to right of centre against the back to back stacks heating the hall and right hand rooms, kitchen to the left heated by a rear lateral stack. 2-storey rear additions contain the main and service stairs (the latter in a turret) and the house has been extended by 2 rooms to the left which were probably formerly outbuildings. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 1:4 window front with a change in plane and roofline to left of centre indicating the original extent of the C17 house. C20 glazed porch to right of centre with C19 front door directly into hall, further door to left into former outbuilding. C20 small-pane timber casements, the 4-light hall window may preserve the original embrasure. Interior: Ground floor only inspected. The hall has good double ovolo-moulded cross beams with elaborate stops and an open fireplace with dressed stone jambs, stone- lined bread oven and timber lintel. The left hand room has an open fireplace, C19 bread oven and replaced timber lintel. The entry has a short ovolo-moulded stopped beam to the right, right hand partition removed. The right hand room has roughly carpentered exposed cross beams and joists and may originally have been plastered, fireplace blocked. First floor and roofspace not inspected, roof timbers said to be partly replaced, partly burnt after an early C20 thatch fire.
