KENTON SOUTH TOWN, Kenton SW 98 SE
6/252 Hanningfields, Little Warborough - and South Warborough House
II
Villa divided into 3 houses. Circa 1850, originally built for George Pycroft (information from owner), a general practioner and the first surgeon to the Devon Volunteers. Stuccoed; slate roof, hipped at ends of main block and west wing, gabled at ends of the 2 rear service wings; rendered stacks, some retaining moulded cornices. Plan: south facing double depth main block (Hanningfields) with the main entrance on the east side into a passage; stair hall off entrance passage to rear right; 2 principal rooms facing south, smaller rooms to the rear. The west wing (Little Warborough) is slightly set back at the left end. 2 parallel rear service wings (South Warborough House) behind the main block formerly had a narrow service yard between. Exterior: 2 storeys. Rusticated quoins and deep eaves with eaves brackets to the main block and west wing. Asymmetrical 2:2 bay south front, the main block (to the right) symmetrical with a verandah in posts, the verandah roof partly lead, part glazed. 2 first floor C19 tripartite sashes to the main block with cornices in moulded brackets and brackets below the sill, the windows glazed with 8 pane sashes in the centre, 4 pane to the outer lights. 2 tall C19 tripartite ground floor sashes to the main block, some glazing bars missing. The wing, to the left, has a lower roofline with 4-pane C19 or C20 sash windows with moulded architraves. The right return of the main block (east elevation) has a pedimented porch (stucco removed) with clasping buttresses with caps rising above the roofline of the porch. C19 2- leaf panelled outer door with a semi-circular fanlight; stack to left of porch, the shaft projecting through the eaves. 2 first floor C19 16-pane sashes to the right to the porch with cornices on moulded brackets, 1 12-pane ground floor sash. The parallel service wings to the north have C19 timber sashes with glazing bars. The east service wing and the west wing abut the main block rather awkwardly suggesting different building phases. Interior: The main range (Hanningfields) only inspected. This retains unusually elaborate plaster cornices to the principal rooms and 2 C19 marble chimney-pieces (one on the first floor), C19 joinery and a stair with an open string, turned balusters and a ramped, wreathed handrail. The roof of the porch is of unusual design with a flat inner ceiling of tiles. A handsome villa.
