Details
SURLINGHAM TG 30 NW 3/82 Remains of Church of 26/11/59 St. Saviour II Ruins of parish church. Almost undateable. Appears to be 3 celled, that is, nave and chancel with a central space. Walls of this central area are substantially built and on north side flat buttresses survive. Since chancel and nave are the same width the suggestion that this building originally had a central tower has some credibility. If so dateable to C12-C13, most likely the latter. Flint and once with ashlar dressings. No roof. Fragments of wall survive here and there. No evidence of western tower. Holes at intervals mark sites of windows, but there are none to the central space, again suggesting a tower. Marks of south porch discernable. A brick arch is in situ to west side of central space in an unlikely place for a chancel arch but very likely as a central tower arch.
