Lodge to Powderham Castle. Circa 1860. Grey limestone rubble with polychromatic
brick detail; slate roof, gabled at ends with crested ridge tiles; stacks with brick
shafts. Gothic.
Plan: L plan, the main block with one entrance facing the drive to Powderham Castle
and a second entrance in the rear facing the road parallel to the Exe Estuary.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 1:1 window front (west) elevation facing the
drive, with the gabled end of the wing to the left. Front door into main block to
the left with a sloping porch hood carried on cusped brackets, stone shield with the
Courtenay amorial bearings above door; projecting stack with set-offs to right of
door. The end of the wing has one ground and one first floor casement, each with
crank-headed arched heads and C19 2-light casement. Small 1-light ground floor
window in the inner return of the wing. The right return of the main block has a
canted bay window to the ground floor and a 3-light crank arched window above with
C19 2-light casements and cusped bargeboards. The east elevation, facing the road,
is picturesquely irregular, projecting to the front to the right with a half-hipped
roof to the front in the centre with curved brackets and a crank-headed arched
doorframe with a plank door; 1-light window above door. 1 ground and 1 first floor
window to the right, similar in design to those on the west elevation.
Interior: Not inspected.
Very intact externally and on a prominent roadside site.
