5/145 Upcott Farmhouse -
II
Farmhouse. Probably late C16, refurbished in 1641 by Richard Crudge (datestone and initials on front). Whitewashed rendered cob and stone rubble; slate roof formerly thatched, hipped at ends; 3 rear lateral stacks. Plan: 3 room and through passage main range (lower end to the right) plus a fourth room at the lower end and a rear left wing at right angles to the main range with a salting-house and former dairy on the ground floor. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5 window front with a front door to right of centre and C19 or C20 3-light timber casements with glazing bars except ground floor right which is a later C20 replacement. Interior: The hall, to left of the passage, has a plaster ceiling with a moulded cornice, the ceiling decorated with plaster motifs including wreaths and floral sprays. 2 chamfered cross beams are plastered over with moulded cornices, all, presumably, of 1641. C20 chimneypiece, probably concealing earlier jambs and lintel. The lower end room has a chamfered step-stopped crossbeam, possibly late C16. The lateral stack is partly blocked but said to retain a bread oven. Left hand room not inspected. Roof: C17 pegged trusses, possibly crucks of some type. At least 2 of the first floor rooms were originally plastered up to the collars of the trusses with a moulded cornice which still survives in the roofspace. Part of this C17 ceiling has collapsed but survives in the roofspace above later inserted ceilings.
