Details

YARCOMBE YARCOMBE ST 20 NW 7/201 Corner cottage - GV II Cottage. Probably late C18 - early C19, modernised in the late C19 - early C20 and again circa 1970. Local stone rubble, plastered and lightly incised as ashlar; stone rubble and brick-stack topped with C20 brick; thatch roof to the main cottage, slate to the service outshot. Plan: the cottage faces south-east and is built across the hillslope. Its plan is 1-room wide, 2 rooms deep with the staircase in the front left corner. The 2 rooms have been united by removing a section of the wall between. Originally only the front room was heated by a stack in the dividing wall but this is now blocked by the staircase. Now only the rear room is heated by a secondary stack in the left end wall. 2 storeys with a secondary kitchen outshot on the left end. Exterior: irregular 2-window front of late C19 - early C20 casements with glazing bars. The front doorway is left of centre and it contains a late C19 - early C20 6- panel door behind a contemporary gabled porch with shaped bargeboards. The main roof is pyramidal. Interior is largely the result of the late C19 - early C20 and circa 1970 modernisations. No carpentry is exposed and the rear fireplace was rebuilt circa 1970. Corner Cottage is one of an attractive group of listed buildings in the small village of Yarcombe.
