SOUTH POOL SOUTH POOL VILLAGE SX 74 SE 6/141 West Court and attached barn to West Court

II

House, formerly farmhouse. C16 origins, remodelled in early - mid C17, extended in C18 and C19 and altered in C20. Slatestone rubble walls, rendered at the front, incorporating some cob to the barn. Gable ended slate roof, hipped roof to barn. Rendered rubble axial stack with tapering cap and brick shaft, similar stack at rear gable end. Brick lateral stack at rear. Plan: complex development of plan, the original form of which is unclear. The earliest feature is a C16 window in the barn at the west end, which runs at right angles to the main house, This might conceivably have been the original house but bears no other evidence of this, such as a fireplace. The house extends to the right, with one room in line with the end of the barn, then the rest projecting forward slightly. This suggests some rebuilding, or the first room may even be an infill although it has C17 features. The projecting range was probably 2 rooms, with a fireplace at the left-hand end. Beyond the room with the fireplace a C20 staircase and entrance hall were made and the room beyond was taken into the C18 rear parlour wing in the C20. At the front of this end is an unheated probably C19 wing. A C19 dairy was also added behind the centre of the house. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical L-shaped front with the barn at the left-hand end set at right-angles extending to the rear. 5-window front, including wing projecting from right-hand end, of late C20 P.V.C. casements. The central part of the house has a C20 leanto porch with P.V.C. glazed door. The left-hand end of the house is recessed and has a partly open-fronted porch with C19 plank door behind. The barn has a small window on its front wall. The doorway is in its left-hand wall and next to it is a small 2-light wooden mullion window with cambered heads to its narrow lights. Interior: kitchen at left-hand end has substantial roughly chamfered ceiling beams. The small fireplace has probably been inserted in the C20 into a pre- existing stack. The central room has the earlier fireplace but it has been partly rebuilt with a renewed lintel although it retains an oven in the left-hand side. Roughly chamfered ceiling beam. The right-hand end room and the wing behind it have been knocked into one room in the C20. The front part, and adjoining stairhall, have chamfered and step-stopped ceiling beams. The fireplace at the rear has a curved back and low slate slab lintel. The left-hand part of the house retains its C17 roof trusses which consist of substantial straight principals with morticed apex, threaded purlins and collars lapped and pegged on. The barn contains no early features inside.
