2/17 Knight's Farmhouse
GV II
House. C17, altered in C18, early C19 and C20. Timber framed, clad with gault brick in Flemish bond, painted brick and plaster, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. Main range of 6 bays facing S, with 2 axial stacks and one rear front right corner. Single-storey extension to left, 1938. Shorter parallel range to rear, C18 with one external stack of red brick near left end, and single-storey lean-to extensions near it. C20 rear wing at right end with one internal stack, and lean-to conservatory to right. 2 storeys. 6-window range of C20 sashes in early C19 apertures. Approximately central 6-panel door with panelled jambs and soffit, moulded flat canopy, and hinged roller blind incorporated, all early C19. Roof hipped. In the main range one transverse beam is exposed, chamfered without stops; 2 others are boxed in. Below roof level the timber frame, reported to be close-studded, is wholly concealed by panelling and plaster finishes. The roof is of joggled butt-purlin construction, the rafters set vertically; it incorporates many re-used rafters from a medieval crownpost roof, some smoke-blackened.
