GV II

Pair of cottages, probably a single farmhouse originally. Late C16 or C17. Rendered stone or cob. Manor Cottage roof thatched, Orchard Cottage tiled. 2 storeys, Orchard Cottage heightened. Manor Cottage has irregular fenestration consisting mainly of cig-type wood casements, most of which are good C20 imitations. Left-hand window of ground storey wholly altered in C20. Doorway, off-centre to right, has plain flat-headed wood frame; plank door having wrought- iron strap-hinges with fleurs-de-lys terminals. Left-hand gable has a rendered chimney-stack, probably of brick, and a C19 wood casement to right in second storey. Interior consists in ground storey of a through passage with large room to left end, smaller room (possibly part of the former hall) to right. Ceiling-beam of left-hand room is chamfered and has run-out stops with bar on one side. Through passage has plank partition on right, including a plank door with long wrought-iron strap hinges. Right-hand room has possible remains of stack in rear wall. Roof- trusses, probably renewed C18 or early C19, have notched apexes without ridge- pieces, threaded purlins, and collars pegged to the faces of the principal rafters. Early fireplaces may be hidden under plaster. Orchard Cottage has doorway to right with C20 lean-to porch; ends of a flat hood-mould either side. One window to left in ground storey and another in centre of second storey, both with C20 wood easements. In right-hand gable a projecting stone chimney-stack with set-offs and tapered cap, the litter defined by a projecting slate-course beneath it. Interior not inspected.
