Details

ST OO NE KENTISBEARE THE SQUARE, Kentisbeare 8/119 Wyndham House - GV II Detached house: Probably late C15 or early C16, with substantial alterations, especially in the C17 and C20. Roughcast cob on stone footings; gable end slate roof. Originally a 3-room, through-passage plan house, the service end to the right of the passage. The hall and passage, together occupying a little over one bay, were open to the roof; the service end (divided from the hall by a partition that rises the full height of the building, and which does not relate to a roof truss) was of 2 storeys from the beginning, as was the inner room, divided from the hall by a closed jointed cruck truss. At some point, probably in the late C16 or early C17 the passage and part of the hall was floored, and this upper room is jettied about 4 feet into the hall (which, by virtue of this modification, was exceptionally narrow, being in effect little more than a smoke bay). The remainder of the hall was floored, probably in the C17, and a rear internal lateral stack inserted. The inner room was heated by a (now blocked) end fireplace. The service end was probably similarly heated. 2 storeys. Exterior All fenestration is late C20, the front (facing The Square) forming a 4 window range, the rear an irregular 3-window range with a conservatory. Interior hall, with deeply chamfered axial beam and one half beam, both stopped before the jetty which is supported on chamfered dragon beams with curved ends. Fireplace lintel chamfered with run-out stops. Inner room with unstopped chamfered axial ceiling beam. Unchamfered axial ceiling beam to passage. The partition between hall and service end is a stud and wattle and plaster construction; higher end jointed cruck closed with wattle and plaster. The first floor partition above the jetty appears to be of similar material, but with smaller scantling. Both jointed cruck trusses have a yoke, that to the higher end set a little below the apex like a very high (and very short) collar. Large diagonal roof ridge. The higher end truss has been charred in a fire.
