SX 79 SW DREWSTEIGNTON HILLMORHAY, Drewsteignton
5/118 Nos. 1, 2 and 3
GV II
3 cottages. An early C17 house was refurbished, rearranged and enlarged in the late C19 when subdivided in cottages. The original part is plastered cob on stone rubble footings; the late C19 work is stone rubble (exposed to rear) with brick dressings; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof, replaced with slate to rear. Plan and development: row of 3 cottages facing south. No.1 at the right (east) end has 1-room plan with an axial stack shared by No.2 adjoining. No.2 also has a 1- room plan and shares its axial stack with No.1. At the left end is an entrance lobby. No.3, at the left end has 2-room plan Here the larger right room has an axial stack backing onto No.2. All 3 cottages are the result of the late C19 build but Nos. 2 and 3 have been converted from an early C17 3-room-and-through-passage plan. No.2 occupies the former through passage and service end room. No.3 occupies the former hall and inner room. No.1, it seems, was new built in the late C19 when the service outshots were added across the rear. All 3 cottages are 2 storeys. Exterior: overall 5-window front, 1 to No.1 and 2 each to Nos. 2 and 3. They are a collection of late C19 and C20 casements and include two 16-pane sashes, and all the first floor windows are mullion-and-transom casements with thatch gables over. No.3 has a late C19 plank door but the doors of Nos. 1 and 2 are C20. All have small flat hoods. The roof runs along the building between the adjoining properties. Interior: only No.3 was available for inspection at the time of this survey. Its early C17 fabric is well-preserved. The cottage doorway leads directly into hall. The fireplace is granite with a replacement lintel. It includes an unsually large side oven of late C19 brick. Alongside to left is the original doorway from the passage. It is blocked but the oak lintel is soffit-chamfered with the step stops, the same finish as the crossbeam. At the upper end of the hall is an oak plank-and- muntin screen, its muntin chamfered with step stops high enough to accommodate an upper end bench. 3-bay roof of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars and dovetail halvings. These cottages form a part of a group of attractive listed buildings in the centre of Drewsteignton village.
