8/183 Lower North Coombe Farmhouse -

II

Farmhouse. Circa late C16, C18 and C20 alterations. Whitewashed rendered cob no stone rubble footings; tiled roof (formerly thatched), gabled at ends; projecting front lateral stack with C18 brick shaft, right end stack. Plan: Almost certainly a 3 room and cross passage plan originally, lower end to the left, and a narrow unheated inner room. The lower end and passage have been repartitioned, probably beginning in the C18 with a dairy to the rear of the passage and subsequent alterations have left 4 small rooms, one an entrance hall containing a C20 stair. The inner room is now used for storage with external access only. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front with the front door, probably on the site of the original entrance, to the left of the lateral stack. Separate entrance to inner room on front at extreme right. 2 and 3-light C20 timber casements with glazing bars. Interiors: The hall has a C20 fireplace, probably concealing earlier features and an intersecting beamed ceiling with moulded beams, fragment of plank and muntin screen at higher end visible from inner room only. Rough cross beam to lower end room, which also has a C20 fireplace; bread oven visible in adjoining barn, earlier lintel and jambs probably concealed. Roof: 2 side-pegged jointed cruck roof trusses survive below a later roof, no main truss over lower end.
