4/41 Shettles (formerly 4/12/51 listed as Olde House)
GV II*
Former farmhouse. C15 with extensions of c.1600 and later. Timber frame, part rendered and part apparent. Colourwashed brick and pantiled roofs. C15 section underbuilt and extended with a taller block in c.1600 which in turn was extended with a lower block in the C18 or early C19. 2 storeys with attic to middle section and cellar to southern section (C15 part). Southern section with irregular modern fenestration and a C17 or C18 external stack to eastern face. Middle section with blocked doorway at join. One restored 5-light hollow-chamfered. mullion and transom window in original opening at first floor level. Similar opening at ground floor reduced to a 3-light modern window. 2 original 2-light hollow-chamfered mullion windows opposite stack. Formerly, exactly similar fenestration to rear facade with surviving stack windows, a modern 3-light ground floor window and 2 C19 case- ment windows at first floor. Shaped eaves sprockets and a gable-end stack with 3 angled interconnecting shafts with boules at interstices. Moulded brick gable corbels and 2 small gable windows with chamfered reveals. Northern section with 3 C19 casement windows at first floor. One cast iron 2-light casement with small panes, one modern 3-light window at ground floor and a modern front door with gabled porch. Dentil cornice, gable-end stack and later lean-tos to rear Interior. Southern section a former open hall floored and probably shortened when middle section added. One surviving cambered and arch-braced tie beam with a moulded octagonal crown post in roofspace. Middle section extensively restored yet retains original 4-bay clasped purlin roof with wind bracing. Northern section with 3 re-used roll- moulded C16 bridging joists.
