8/69 Dunscombe Farmhouse including cob garden wall to south-west

II

Farmhouse, former mansion of Bodley family. Possibly late 016-early C17 core, rebuilt in late C17 or C18, refurbished in C19. Flemish bond brick on footings of squared volcanic stone blocks; front block plastered; slate roofs. 2 parallel gable-ended ranges. 2-room, double-depth plan with central cross passage to rear stair. C19 rear service block. Main house faces south-east. 3 gable-ended stacks and rear axial stack to front right room. 2 storeys with attics in roofspace, half basement to stairs and vaulted cellars under north-east (right) end. 3-window front. Central door behind late C19-early C20 gabled porch with glass roof and sides. C20 windows either side and late C19-early C20 9-pane sashes under segmental heads to first floor. High plastered cob wall with pitched slate roof extends from south-west side along one side of garden. Rear elevation of white- washed brick includes some C19 casements with small panes; contemporary 5-panel door and rectangular fanlight with glazing bars and margin panes. 2 probably reset late C16-early C17 Beer stone 2-light stair windows with ovolo-moulded mullions and hoodmoulds. Both have 2 vertical iron bars to each light and tall upper window contains 24 rectangular leaded panes each light. North-east double gable end also includes late C16-early C17 Beer stone features; 2 arched doorways of re-used moulding to cellars and 2 windows with hoodmoulds on ground floor. Interior has mainly C19 furnishings and fittings but also includes some late C16- C17 features; left rear room has moulded beam from a 4-panel intersecting beam ceiling and stairs to half-basement has closed string, heavy turned oak balusters and moulded flat handrail. Closed string dog-leg stair above could by late C17 or C18 but balusters are boxed in. Plain finished cross beams to all first floor rooms and 8 narrow bays of A-frame trusses in each roof (probably C17). House was apparently rebuilt or refaced in brick in early C19 but re-use of so many architectural fragments suggests that some earlier fabric may survive. Oak panelling and high quality carved chimney piece of 1604 removed to Downes (q.v.) . Formerly known as Higher Dunscombe.
