2/72 Farm buildings approx 12m north of Elston Barton Farmhouse and adjoining courtyard walls to south between the two
GV II*
Range of farm buildings including gate to Elston Barton (q.v.)., stables, cartshed, carriageway, cider-house and apple store and walls projecting south enclosing courtyard between house and farmbuildings. Early-mid C17, with C19 alterations. Plastered cob on rubble footings; corrugated iron roof (replacing thatch). L- shaped building with main block backing onto road facing south into courtyard and with small south wing projecting forward at left (west) end. Originally coachhouse and stables to left of carriageway, cider-house and apple store to right. 2 storeys high throughout. Irregular 5-window front, mostly unglazed C19 2-light mullion windows. Central wide carriageway with early-mid C17 lintels on each side richly-moulded (same as hall in Elston Barton q.v.) with step stops. Inside the carriageway which forms, in effect, a gatehouse, a large contemporary crank-headed oak gateway has chamfered surround and now carries single leaf C19 plank door. At first floor level to right of carriageway C19 wooden box contains pigeon-holes. Four doors, one each side of courtyard wall to right of carriageway and to left main door outside courtyard wall and another in end of projecting wing. Roof is hipped on wing and at left end. To rear, onto the road, a loading door to applestore to left, C20 full height garage doors at right end and irregularly- spaced 2 windows between. Inside there are full height cob walls either side of carriageway and another to west (in stables). Cider house is part-floored, open against carriageway. Stables preserve 4 bays of C17 roof with A-frame trusses with pegged, lap-joined collars. Remainder of roof replaced in mid-late C19. From a point approx 6m either side of carriageway plastered cob walls with rubble footings and slate roofs cross southwards to meet the farmhouse (q.v.) and enclose an attractive pitched stone courtyard. Eastern wall includes two feeding bays. Rare survival of C17 farmyard and has strong visual impact.
