9/203 Pilemoor and adjoining outbuilding
5.4.66 II
Former farmhouse. C16 origins, thoroughly altered in the late C20. Colourwashed rendered stone rubble, some cob to rear wall of adjoining outbuilding. House with cedar shingle roof (formerly thatched) hipped at the left end, gabled at the right end and 2 rear lateral stacks: outbuilding adjoining at right end has a lower, tiled roof. Plan: Present plan a single depth main range consisting of an unheated entrance room at the left end containing the stair and a large room to the right (formerly 2 rooms) with 2 rear lateral stacks (1 blocked). The left hand end of the adjoining outbuilding, which is slightly set back from the main block, was evidently part of the house at one time; rear wing at right angles to main range forms T plan. Late the alterations have obscured the evolution of the house. The old list description refers to "Brick stacks, one lateral" and the blocked stack may be a late C20 alteration, no existing evidence of end stacks. An exceptional plank and muntin screen between the 2 right hand rooms has been removed. Exterior: 2 storey house, outbuilding formerly 2 storey but flooring removed at left end. Asymmetrical 4 window front to house with a C20 gabled porch on posts to left of Asymmetrical garden door to the right hand. C20 timber casement windows. The adjoining outbuilding has 2 doorways on the front and a C20 window. Interior: High quality intersecting moulded beamed ceiling to centre room of house; fragment of plain plank and muntin screen between 2 left hand rooms. Moulded cross beams (formerly intersecting) in outbuilding, of a different design and earlier date. Roof: Pegged X apex trusses of various types throughout, probably C18. One charred purlin re-used over main range, presumably after an accidental fire. The richly moulded muntins of the former screen survive in part in an outbuilding: 2 muntins, placed back to back, have been used as a prop in the house. On the line of the former partition between the 2 right hand rooms.
