SX 19 NE CREDITON HAMLETS
6/76 Higher Neopardy, Nos. 1 and 2
II
Farmhouse, converted to 3 cottages, now 2 houses. C16 with C17 improvements, extended and divided in C18, modernised in mid-C20. Plastered cob on rubble footings; stone stacks with brick bops; wheat read thatched roof. Originally a 3- room and through passage plan with service room at east end (right of south-facing front). Possibly C17 service wing to rear of passage. Extended one room to west in C18 when whole house altered and divided. Now No.1 to left in C18 extension and inner room, No.2 in hall, passage and service end. Gable end stacks and hall stack backing onto passage. 2 storeys. 6-window front of C19 and C20 casements of various sizes and irregular disposition. Most with glazing bars. The thatch lifts to accommodate 3 half-dormers to left and the left 2 of these have C19 small rectangular panes. Passage door lies behind C20 glass-sided conservatory with monopitch thatch roof. Former cottage door at right end of building and door to No.1 into right side of C18 extension. Hall stack has original volcanic ashlar chimney shaft with moulded coping, now raised in C19 brick. Interior: oak plank-and-muntin screen to lower side of passage. In mid C17 service room was remodelled as a parlour with plain cross beams intended for plaster cladding and high quality volcanic ashlar fireplace with oak lintel and ogee- moulded surround, now with inserted C18 brick side oven. Hall has C16 volcanic ashlar fireplace with chamfered oak lintel and was floored in late C16-early C17 with cross beam with deep chamfer and step stops. Only the head beam of upper end hall screen remains. Small inner room has massive but plainly-finished axial beam. Side pegged jointed cruck truss exposed over hall-inner room partition but roof over hall inaccessible. Mid-C17 roof over service end apparently A-fame trusses. Crudely-finished C18 truss over western extension, contemporary fireplace with side oven, and presumably reused chamfered and step stopped cross beam.
