Country House in domestic Palladian style built for Edward Base in 1761. Of red brick and black pantiles. Double pile of 2½ storeys, with 2, 2 storey service blocks linked by single storey wings. North (entrance) facade, and south (garden) facade of 7 bays with 3 bay pediments. To north, central stone portico, with entablature and pediment supported by 2 unfluted Ionic columns and 2, ½ columns. To south, central door With stone pedimented doorcase with Ionic pilasters. Terrace across 3 bays with stone balustrade and steps. C20 sash windows in original openings with sash bars, stone sills and slightly cambered gauged brick arches. Stone modillion cornice and parapet. Pediment with shield and Rocco ornament. Hipped roof With internal chimney stacks with stone caps. 3 bay service blocks with sash windows with glazing bars and gauged brick arches, and hipped roofs linked to the main house, to the north, with 3 bay blind arcaded walls with semi-circular arches, central doors and pediments. Links to the south, 5 bay wings with central open pediment over semi-circular arched opening flanked by brick pilasters. Storey height windows with glazing bars and flat gauged brick arches. Stone molillion cornice with brick parapet and stone urns. Interior mainly Edwardian and Victorian. Entrance hall with 2 fluted Ionic columns and 2 pilasters. Marble fire places in Saloon, drawing room and dining room circa 1761. (John Kenworthy-Browne and others. Burks and Saville Guide to Country Houses. Vol. III).
