Large house. Early C17, said previously to have been dated 1614. Brick in English bond, with diapering to facade. Tile and pantile roofs. E-shaped plan, the gabled bays hardly projecting, with stair bay to rear, and C17 service range to west. Principal (south) facade of 5 bays, 2 storeys, the eastern bay of a slightly different type of brick does not bond-in to rest of house. All windows with rendered brick mullions and transoms of cavetto moulding. Gabled 2 storey porch of plain red brick to centre bay. 4-centred archway with ovolo moulding to reveals; moulded brick pediment over. Moulded platband which continues across the facade; polygonal pinnacles to angles; 3-light window to first floor; C19/C20 small casement to stepped gable. 7-light windows to 1st, 4th and 5th bays; 2nd bay has 6-light window with cellar window below of 2 lights with cavetto moulding. 6-light windows to the 1st, 2nd and 4th bays of first floor; 5th bay with 7 lights; those to the 1st and 5th projecting gabled bays have moulded brick pediments. 4-light pedimented windows to stepped gables of 1st and 5th bays; further 2-light pedimented window to 4th floor of 1st bay; plaque with pediment to gable of 5th bay. Off-centre axial stack with 3 clustered round shafts. 2 external stacks to west gable wall each with 3 octagonal shafts joined at the top. The northern stack is enclosed by the C17 service wing. The central section of the east gable wall is rebuilt; some render remains, probably from C17 window reveals. Rear (north) facade of 4 bays. Walling of eastern bay rebuilt, probably in C18, now with dentil eaves, cornice and hipped roof. Gabled stair bay with 3-light mullioned window to cellar; 5-light window with pediment over, with 4-light window above; 2-light window with pediment to stepped gable. 2 blocked windows to east wall of stair bay with platband below, cut by later lean-to. Platband also on west wall of stairbay and continues across rest of - facade between ground and first floors. External stack in angle between stair bay and 3rd bay with 2 polygonal shafts and repaired caps with sawtooth dentils. 5-light mullioned window to 3rd bay and C20 door, probably in earlier opening. 5-light mullioned and transomed window to 1st floor with remains of corbelled out stack over door. Western gabled bay of 4 storeys with fenestration as its facade. East wall of this bay with 2 2-light mullioned window to ground floor; 2 2-light mullioned and transomed windows to first floor. Interior. Ovolo moulded beam to ground floor, east wing. All fireplaces with 4-centred brick arches with ovolo moulding. Introduced chimney bressumer, ceiling beams and joists in present kitchen. Principal stair with turned balusters, newel posts with acorn tops. Also spiral stair with timber newel. Passage from great hall gives access to services and raised chamber with cellar below (as Coldham Hall, Suffolk). Some C17 panelling. Roofs with 2 rows butt purlins, that to east wing with slightly heavier scantling. Service range. C17. English bond.brick. Pantile roof. 3-cell plan. 2 storey 3 bay facade. C20 casement in earlier opening; 2 3-light C19 casements with C20 door between. 2 4-light C20 casements to first floor and one C19 2 light window. Parapet gables with brick kneelers. Gable wall has 2 slatted openings to ground floor under soldier arches. 4-light C20 window to first floor under segmental arch. Blocked attic light with soldier arch. Internal stack to rear wall. C20 fenestration. To west of this range, at right angles and joined by a wall, is a single storey outbuilding with gable and rear walls in C17 brick; stepped gables. N. Pevsner.
