Details

SS 90 NW BICKLEIGH BICKLEIGH 5/22 Chest tomb about 7 metres south - east of the porch of the Church of St Mary GV II Chest tomb. Early C17. Volcanic trap. The chest has a moulded oversailing lid incorporating a Gothic inscription in relief on a frieze above the chest. The inscription is partly illegible but was recorded by Beatrix Cresswell as commemorating Simon Pidsley, died 1609. A high quality tomb : any relief-carved lettering of the C17 is a rare survival on memorials in the county.
