C16 remodelled in C17, but largely remodelled again in C18 (see date stone on gable
to left "F. RACHE FECIT 1782"). Part rubble, part ashlar, with Welsh slate roofs.
Two blocks at right angles to each other, the one facing Oxford Street has the more
ancient character. Two storeys and attic, 4 Yorkshire sash windows. Steep pitched
roof with stone verges. Gable end has the sashes with glazing bars with 3 light
stone mullion casement in gable. The chief feature is a large and tall exterior
stone stack. The High Street range is more consciously C18. Four windows above,
3 below, all sashes with glazing bars. Central elliptical carriage arch with
imposts and keystone, now blocked in recess with modern doors. Oxford Street front
is extended by a mid C19 extension with coach entry and gabled dormer over. In the
yard the former stables, offices and servants quarters form a continuous 2-storey
perimeter. A double range juts out at rear making 2 courts; one part was a detached
C18 kitchen with half-hipped stone tile roof (later larder and now boiler-house).
Interior clearly shows the C18 adaptation of the Tudor house as the cobbled coachway
is ceiled by a good quality moulded beam and hollow chamfer joists, similar to those
in the bar-room to the north, latter room has a 10 ft wide repaired Tudor-arch
fireplace moulded and with wooden lintel. C18 panelled room to south of coachway
(panelling re-adjusted when room extended by removing passage).
