Details
WEST ANSTEY SS 82 NW 1/48 Woods - 20.2.67 - II Farmhouse, now private dwelling. Probably late C16, extended apparently at night end in C17, lower end rebuilt in C20. Unrendered stone rubble, some cob to rear. Asbestos slate roof with gable ends. Stone rubble stack at right end and tall front lateral hall stack with offsets. Plan: variant 3-room and cross-passage plan, the wide cross-passage divided axially to create an unheated rear room, and the lower end to left rebuilt in C20 as a leanto. 2-storey gable-ended unheated service wing, probably early C17, to rear of hall creating overall T-shaped plan. As interior could not be fully inspected, the full sequence of development is not clear, but a straight joint and change in the plinth between the hall and inner room suggests the latter has been added, probably in the C17. Exterior: 2 storeys. 3-window range. C20 2-light casements, hall and inner room nave 3-light casements. Leanto slate roof to C20 porch. Interior: inner room entirely altered. Original fireplace probably concealed. Deep cnamfered cross ceiling beam and bressumers to hall. C17 panelling to rear of former hall bench. Two 4-centred arched doorways with chamfered surrounds to rear wing. This type of plan is shared with Hill Farmhouse and Newland Farmhouse, West Anstey (q.v.)
